How to Look Your Best in Your Wedding Photos

If you’re planning your wedding, you already know the importance of your wedding photography. For those who’ve never really thought about it, there are many reasons why you shouldn’t mess around when it comes to your Cornish wedding photography. The decorations will get taken down, your cake will be eaten, and your invites will get discarded, but your wedding photos will remain with you for decades to come. They’ll keep the memory of that beautiful day fresh in your mind for generations.

With this in mind, you can now appreciate why you need to look good in your wedding photos. You do not want to go through life cringing anytime someone mentions pictures from your wedding. So how do you go about making sure that they are of high quality and truly reflect the beauty of that day? Here are some tips and tricks on how to look your best in your wedding photos from me at Steven Rees-Webb Photography.

Not every tip will apply to you, so don’t worry if you’re doing things a little different.

Go Professional with Your Hair and Makeup

Your wedding will only happen once in your relationship. Get your hair and makeup done professionally. It will make a world of difference in how you feel. You know that fantastic feeling when you’re fresh out of the salon with a new cut and all the works? You feel like a new person. That feeling shows when you take pictures.

When selecting a makeup artist for your wedding, please remember to look through their previous work and be sure that you like the way their work comes out. Communicate what you want adequately and use images where necessary to help get your vision across. A makeup and hair trial is also pretty essential and enables you to know what to expect on the day. I’m always more than happy to offer recommendations to my couples. I’ve worked with some fantastic award-winning hair and makeup artists and can give you the inside scoop on the best suppliers.

Have A Checklist

What kind of images do you see when you picture yourself looking at your wedding photos years from now? Make sure you put that down on a checklist. Do you want more images of the individuals at your wedding or more photos of the ceremony as a whole? How about wedding portraits? What group photos would you like? Try to keep these to a minimum to reduce stress on the day; group photos are one of the most stressful parts of the day’s photography, trying to get everyone together for pictures can be like trying to herd kittens.

Forward these to your photographer too so that they have a good idea of what you expect.

Use Props

Unless you’re a model and get your pictures taken for a living, most of us are camera-shy, this could make things awkward, and sadly, that feeling could show in your photographs. As the day progresses, you will most likely get more used to having your photo taken anyway, but the following tips can help you ease into it. Props can help counter this. Now for your wedding, you obviously can’t use a giant moustache or something like that. Improvise with your bouquet, champagne glass or even furniture. They’ll help relax your pose so you can look natural.

Play Music

Music has lovely effects on our emotions. Whether you’re a jazz kind of gal or a pop prince, turn up that music and rock to it. Get some music playing in the background as you and your girls get ready on the morning of the wedding. You can also have a little dance party and drink some bubbly. Trust me; you won’t even notice your photographer is there, and this way, they can capture the real moments.

Choose the Right Photographer

You can’t have good wedding pictures if your photographer is not that great at their job. You have to do your research to make sure that you end up with a photographer who is good at their craft. You want someone that you can vibe with and who is also on the same page with the style you have in mind. Most photographers have a specific style on the day, some photographers will be more involved in “creating” photos and in posing their couples, and others, like myself, will be more natural and offer a documentary style. I feel the documentary style helps capture the day as it was always intended to be, as it would be if I were never there. I also find this brings out the best in people who aren’t comfortable in front of the camera.

Have Fun!

After all the time that you’ve spent planning for your wedding, the least you can do is enjoy it. One major regret that newlyweds seem to have is not stepping back to enjoy the day. Take in the moment and be happy you’ve achieved this milestone. You can also arrange with your photographer so that they can take you away for some photos in the afternoon and you can use the opportunity to relax away from the chaos and enjoy some alone time. My couples usually find this to be a nice break for an hour or so, and they have some stunning photos to look back on.

Here at Steven Rees-Webb Photography, I believe that the best kind of picture is candid. One of my favourite compliments from my couples is “we hardly noticed you were there”. Despite being 6’2, I still manage to blend in with your guests.
